When I get a call asking me to inject PDGF…

September 29, 2025

In the world of cosmetic medicine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is creating buzz as a possible new injectable treatment for filler like treatment. It’s already used in other areas of medicine—like healing wounds and repairing tissues – it aids wound healing after laser  But when it comes to injecting it into the face for cosmetic purposes, things get complicated. The FDA has only approved certain PDGF products for use on the skin’s surface, not for injection. That means doctors who inject PDGF for aesthetic reasons may be stepping outside of what’s legally and medically approved.

There’s a big difference between using a product in an “off-label” way (which is legal with FDA-approved drugs) and using something that hasn’t been approved at all. Injecting PDGF falls into this second, riskier category—unless it’s being done as part of official medical research. Some states are more flexible than others, letting doctors use experimental treatments with patient consent, but laws vary a lot from place to place.

On top of that, insurance companies may not cover problems that arise from unapproved treatments, which puts more pressure on doctors to be cautious. While early studies on PDGF in aesthetics look promising, more research is needed before it becomes a standard, safe option. For now, both patients and providers should be aware of the legal gray areas and make fully informed decisions together.

For me in my practice injecting PDGF is a no.
