
We’ve known for years that Sculptra helps the skin make more collagen. But new research is giving us a better understanding of what may be happening beneath the surface.
A 2026 study looked at tissue treated with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), the active ingredient in Sculptra. The researchers found changes suggesting that PLLA may do more than stimulate collagen—it may help create a healthier, more active environment for tissue repair and remodeling.
And I find that incredibly exciting.

Aging Is About More Than Wrinkles
As we age, we don’t simply lose collagen. Our skin becomes thinner, its supportive structure changes, and we lose or redistribute some of the fat and bone that gives the face youthful shape and support.
So rather than simply replacing what has been lost, I’m increasingly interested in treatments that encourage the body to do more of its own rebuilding.
That is the idea behind regenerative aesthetics.
Why I Love Sculptra
Unlike a traditional filler, Sculptra doesn’t simply add volume. It works gradually, stimulating the body’s own biological processes.
This new research found changes in cells involved in collagen production, tissue maintenance, and repair. It may also help explain previous findings showing increases in some of the skin and underlying fat tissue after Sculptra treatment.
This does suggest that PLLA SCULPTRA may be influencing the tissue environment in ways we are only beginning to understand.
For me, that is the most exciting part of aesthetic medicine.
Instead of asking only, “What can I add to the face?” we can also ask, “How can I encourage the body to strengthen and rejuvenate its own tissues?”
Sculptra is a beautiful example of that approach—gradual, natural-looking and biologically driven. And this new research gives us another reason to be excited about its potential for long-term facial preservation and rejuvenation. I’ve been treating patients with sculptra for over 20 years and it remains one of my favorite treatments for maintaining a natural facial shape and skin quality
