Training Matters!

Where do I look for the best facelift surgeon or best eyelid blepharoplasty surgeon?

When considering a facelift or any facial rejuvenation surgery, it’s essential to understand your surgeon’s training and board certification. In the United States, only certain medical specialties include rigorous, focused training in facial anatomy and aesthetics.

Start by looking for surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (for general plastic surgeons operating on the full body) , the American Board of Ophthalmology (for oculofacial plastic surgeons) or the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (for facial plastic surgeons specializing in the face, head, and neck). All three of these boards are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which upholds the highest standards for physician education, examination, and continuing certification.

Importantly, oculofacial (oculoplastic) surgeons are key specialists in facial surgery. These physicians are board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and then undergo additional fellowship training specifically in eyelid, orbital, and facial procedures. As sub-specialists in the face, board-certified oculoplastic surgeons bring exceptional precision and a deep understanding of the periocular region. Many are recertified every 10 years, ensuring their skills remain current and aligned with the latest surgical advancements. Their qualifications are especially critical when operating around the eyes, where both function and aesthetics must be preserved.

In contrast, it’s important to be cautious with the title “cosmetic surgeon.” This term is not a board-certified specialty and can be used by physicians who lack formal training in plastic surgery, otolaryngology, or oculoplastics. A doctor trained in an unrelated field—like internal medicine or OB/GYN—can legally market themselves as a cosmetic surgeon without ever having completed a surgical residency focused on the face or body.

When seeking facial surgery, always verify your surgeon’s board certification and sub-specialty training. True facial specialists have completed years of dedicated education, rigorous testing, and ongoing recertification to ensure patient safety and optimal results.
